Sofia Cacciapaglia was born in 1983 in Ponte dell’Olio, Italy. She studied Fine Arts at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera in Milan, where she obtained her diploma in 2006. After receiving her degree, she moved to New York in 2007, where she held her first personal exhibition. Since then, her work has been exhibited in galleries, foundations, and museums in Italy, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and China.
In 2011, she became the youngest artist invited to the Italian pavilion at the 54th Venice Biennale of Art, and in 2023, Cacciapaglia was presented at the Untitled Art Fair. For the publication of her first monograph on her work, she achieved “Locus Amoenus” in May 2019, her first 360° large installation that covered all the walls of her studio in Milan with cardboard collected in the street, which she transformed into a floral garden from floor to ceiling.
This work conveys an environmental message, giving a second life to repurposed material through the representation of nature and the rebirth of spring.
Sinuous forms, suspended figures that intertwine and overlap, characterized by soft and light tones. Ranging from miniature works to large-scale statements on cardboard, Sofia Cacciapaglia’s art invites viewers to contemplate femininity, as well as the emotional and spiritual interconnectedness of women. Her paintings depict women intertwined, joined by the rhythm of cascading hair, touching hands, and dancing feet. When admiring her work, we are immediately immersed in a mysterious and captivating universe, intrigued by clandestine glances and poetic faces.
Sofia Cacciapaglia is particularly fond of painting on recycled cardboard, which she transforms into a medium for depicting women and gardens. This approach is rooted in the artistic, historical, and social tradition of Italian arte povera. Her floral works address the cycle of the seasons and encourage the reuse of resources.
